All worthwhile candidates, but the Blue Oval's finest street car might actually be a s hatchback with an engine from a Pinto and a spoiler from a teenager's sketchbook: the Escort RS Cosworth.

This all-wheel-drive, one-of Group A homologation special used a weaponized version of Ford's T88 Metric engine, reworked into a twin-cam valve with a Garrett turbo slapped to the side of its 2.

Output was rated at hp but could reach three times that amount in competition and aftermarket guises. The RS "Cossie" never sold in America, and only a very small number leaked into the States through gray-market importation.

We spotted this example at an Ohio specialty performance dealership, and the sales group claims it has somehow been made to comply with EPA and CARB regs, with a California smog tag included. There are only 13, miles on the odometer, and it's slightly modified with a tune and exhaust, good for a potent hp—at less than lbs, that puts it in the same league as the new WRX STI. Include sold.Conveniently, Cosworth had developed a valve twin-cam version of the Pinto engine that, once turbocharged, would create a stonking Touring Car in the light three-door fleet Sierra bodyshell. Aerodynamic work yielded effective spoilers; a nose intake fed air to the intercooler.

Initial sales network reaction was poor, so Ford massaged the price and spec, restricting the model to one trim colour and three external: Diamond White, Black or Moonstone Blue. The new four-door Sapphire saloon shell proved no heavier than the old three-door, but more aerodynamic.

The RS, modified from standard three-door Cosworths by Aston Martin Tickford, was the most successful on track and is now the most desirable, but was barely any quicker as a road car. All were right-hand drive, intended for the UK, and almost all were black. The engine featured a stiffer block, larger turbo and intercooler, twin-rail injection and modified inlets.

Road power only went up from to bhp, but race trim soared from to bhp. Spoilers increased downforce and the rear suspension allowed more adjustability. Copies are common: Ford sold a vast range of development parts and it was possible to uprate to RS spec. Ford Motorsport part numbers begin with code Finally, inthe new MT75 transmission was strong enough to mate the Cosworth engine to the 4x4 chassis.

Ford wasted no time in developing the Cosworth 4x4, with a stronger block, revised head and manifolds, plus a slightly larger turbo than on the Sapphire, giving peak power of bhp to cope with the extra friction and lb penalty of the four-wheel drive. Originality, meticulous servicing and lack of rot are the key areas when buying any Cosworth Sierra.

Meticulous servicing is vital. Upgrades are common but cause problems: standard engines must stay below bhp. The cambelt should be changed every 30, miles or five years. Listen for piston slap when starting from cold, and have a compression test done. Misfires can be minor, but indicate serious issues. Careful maintenance, especially avoiding air leaks, prolongs turbo life.

Internal corrosion leading to head gasket failure is common: look for coolant leaks on exhaust side and signs of overheating. Confirm that fans work at full capacity. Discs warp with heavy use. Rubber suspension bushes need regular replacement or polyurethaneespecially in the steering track control arms and anti-roll bar mounts. Recaros are good but cabin is otherwise cheaply made. Look for cracked plastic dash top, worn seat bolsters and failed controls.

Trim material is hard to find. Borg Warner T5 transmission is strong, albeit notchy when cold. Check for worn synchro on second and third; baulking on all gears might be a failing clutch cable. A Cosworth should be reliable, dependable transport, although minor electrical issues can have a massive impact.

Poor supply to the fuel pump can make the engine run lean and melt pistons: a separate fused supply is vital. Check the fuel pressure regulator at the front of the fuel rail, especially its pipework and hoseclips: leaks, again, have disastrous results. They were the ostentatious aerodynamic hallmarks attached to fast Fords — notably, Escort and Sierra Cosworths.

Where the standard RS Cosworth was a homologation special in the truest sense Ford built 5, Sierra RS Cosworths between andin order to go Group A racing the RS was the evo special that got people excited. With only produced — all of them RHD, UK-only and all meant to be black in reality 56 were white and 52 moonstone blue they became hot property. And not just a lot of money, but crazy money. So under the bonnet is a bhp and lb ft from a 2. His family ran the car for three years before parking it in one of their estate garages in latewhere it remained untouched for some 26 years.

Big Reads. Big Read. Is this the moment EVs go mainstream? It was the result of a Ford Motorsport project with the purpose of producing an outright winner for Group A racing in Europe.

The project was defined by Stuart Turner in the spring of He had recently been appointed head of Ford Motorsport in Europe, and he realised right away that Ford was no longer competitive in this area. Turner got in touch with Walter Hayesat the time the vice-president of public relations at Ford, to get support for the project.

Hayes had earlier been the driving force behind the development of the Ford GT40 that won Le Mans inand the Cosworth DFV engine that brought Ford victories and 12 world championships in Formula One during the s and s. Hayes found the project very appealing and promised his full support.

Turner then invited Ken Kohrs, vice-president of development, to visit Ford's longtime partner, the automotive company Cosworthwhere they were presented a project developed on Cosworth's own initiative, the YAA engine. This was a twin camvalve engine based on Ford's own T88 engine block, better known as the Pinto. This prototype proved an almost ideal basis for the engine Turner needed to power his Group A winner.

Turner's project would only need about 5, engines, but Ford nevertheless accepted the conditions. The extra 10, engines would later become one of the reasons Ford also chose to develop a four-door, second generation, Sierra RS Cosworth.

To find a suitable gearbox proved more challenging. The Borg-Warner T5also used in the Ford Mustangwas chosen, but the higher revving nature of the Sierra caused some problems. Eventually Borg-Warner had to set up a dedicated production line for the gearboxes to be used in the Sierra RS Cosworth.

Much of Ford's external documentation for customer race preparation indicated "developed for the XR4Ti" when describing parts that were Sierra Cosworth specific. Some production parts from the XR4Ti made their way into the Cosworth such as the speedometer with integral boost gauge and the motorsport chassis stiffening plates. In AprilTurner's team decided on the Sierra as a basis for their project. The Sierra filled the requirements for rear wheel drive and decent aerodynamic drag.

A racing version could also help to improve the poor, and somewhat undeserved, reputation that the Sierra had earned since its introduction in Lothar Pinske, responsible for the car's bodywork, demanded carte blanche when it came to appearance in order to make the car stable at high speed.

Experience had shown that the Sierra hatchback body generated significant aerodynamic lift even at relatively moderate speed.

This was based on an XR4i body with provisional body modifications in fibreglass and aluminium. The car's appearance raised little enthusiasm. The large rear wing caused particular reluctance.
